Earlier this year (2018) there was a political demonstration by the opposition party, Chadema, as they marched to a local voting station demanding to know why none of their representatives were given permission on time to be present in the rooms when votes were being counted.
Aquilina was a young student catching a local bus (daladala) to head back home. The police opened fire to scare the large marching crowd and one of the bullets entered the daladala and right into the back of Aquilinas head. She died instantly. There were many questions around the case, most importantly, why the police would fire live ammunition at their citizens. This was my contribution to the discussion happening at that time and a reminder that as a country we are mostly still prisoners of politics.
